Epistemology

I have been working on a project of naturalizing modal metaphysics.

My doctoral research consists of designing and arguing in favor of a modal metaphysics based on a naturalist methodology. Starting from the analysis of the formalisms of spaces of possibilities in scientific theories —particularly of physics— I seek to obtain a theory of the nature of possibility that is coherent and sufficiently unifying of the use of this concept in science, and at least keeps the central aspects of the philosophical concept of metaphysical possibility. I aim to relate this naturalistic theory with the concept of constraint that is used in the sciences, which I take as the fundamental posit of a primitivist view of modality.

As an indirect defense of primitivism, I aim to argue against reductionist theories; for example, in `Modality is not Explainable by Essence,' I argued against the essentialist theory of Lowe, Fine, Hale and others.

Finally, I am also thinking about the consequences of the naturalization of modal metaphysics for modal logic, thus designing systems of logic more appropriate to the background metaphysics.

I am interested in meta-epistemological issues, such as epistemic consequentialism and the discussion between realists and anti-realists about epistemic normativity. On these topics I have one paper under review and another one almost completed.

I am also interested in modal epistemology, in which I believe that cognitive science and probability theory can be very useful.
